Alaska is the largest state in the United States and is certainly one of the country's greatest assets (although many didn't believe it at the time of Seward's Folly, when the territory was purchased from Russia in 1867!). Its beauty is unparalleled, and much of the state remains undeveloped and wild. There are several cities and urban areas, however, including Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks. The University of Alaska (with several campuses) is the largest school, but there are several others as well.
Alaska is quite dependent on its tourist industry, which brings international visitors by the thousands. The area attracts eclectic chefs from all over the world. As might be expected, fish and seafood are incorporated into many of the dishes; but Alaska also has some viable farmland and today, of course, global trade has removed most of the ingredient-scarcity barriers that may have existed in the past. For a culinary student with a taste for the unusual and an unquenchable spirit, Alaska may be the experience of a lifetime.
