James Beard Foundation Scholarships

James Beard Foundation ScholarshipsApplications for the James Beard Foundation School Scholarships and the Friends of James Beard Scholarships are about to close -- the postmark due date is May 15.

James Beard, who lived throughout most of the 20th century (1903-1985), was an American chef and writer who is considered by many to be the father of current-day American gastronomy. He was born in Portland, Oregon, where he developed his passion for fresh ingredients of the Pacific Northwest, including wild berries, fish, and fruits. The Foundation that bears his name supports "educational experiences that help people learn about and engage with food", and administers the annual James Beard Foundation Awards to recognize excellence in chefs, cookbook authors, food journalists, restaurant designers, and others.

In 2008, the Foundation awarded 80 scholarships worth over $265,900. Fifty-three students received cash awards, while 27 students received tuition waivers.

The Foundation also awards the Jean-Louis Palladin Professional Work/Study Grant. The grant is worth up to $10,000 for working chefs. It allows a cook or chef, who has at least three years of experience working in a professional kitchen, to learn from and work with master growers, producers, and food artisans.
