Culinary Students Compete with Iron Chef

International Culinary School students compete on Iron Chef A team of three students at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix competed recently on Iron Chef America. (See the video clip below.)

The challenge was the first time the popular TV show had student chefs compete with an Iron Chef.

According to Chef Eric Watson, associate instructor and assistant academic director who led The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix's team, the team has been together for more than two years and has participated in many competitions, receiving two gold and two silver medals in state and regional American Culinary Federation competitions.

Team members were selected based on academic excellence, performance experience and passion for the culinary arts. To prepare for the Iron Chef America competition, the student challengers practiced four-to-five times per week in addition to attending classes.

The secret ingredient in the episode was balsamic vinegar. The student competitors used 3, 8, 25, and rare 50-year-old balsamic vinegar in dishes ranging from balsamic-glazed quail to balsamic-poached apricot.

Now, many students are competing for a $20,000 Next Iron Chef Scholarship to one of the International Culinary Schools of the Art Institutes. The final winner will be chosen by Susan Stockton, senior vice president of culinary production at the Food Network.
